DIY TOOTHPASTE

3 Reasons Why You Should Make Your Own Toothpaste

1. SAVES YOU MONEY
Who wants to save money? Prior to making our own, my family and I were using Tom’s of Maine, costing an average of $5.00 for a 5.2 oz tube. Homemade toothpaste will cost an average of $1.39 for 5.33 oz. The cost savings is approximately $3.61 per tube, at 2-3 tubes a month for my large family, which is a total of 129.96 per year! Doesn’t seem like a lot, but this is also saving you from harmful ingredients in store-bought toothpaste, and fewer trips to your local store which may incur transportation costs and wasted time that you could be spending with your family.

2. NO HARMFUL INGREDIENTS

KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE! Did you know that most commercial toothpaste contain harmful ingredients such as fluoride (the most commonly known), Triclosan, and Propylene Glycol.

Fluoride is a toxic chemical that accumulates in your tissues over time, wreaks havoc with enzymes, and produces a number of serious adverse health effects, including the nervous system andendocrine dysfunction along with a lower IQ. Fluoride is also found in a wide range of the US water supply.

Triclosan has even been linked to concerns over antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are a serious concern, as they can promote a wide variety of health problems, including breast, ovarian, prostate, and testicular cancer, pre-term and low birth weight babies, precocious puberty in girls, and descended testicles in boys. Triclosan may interfere with a type of cell signaling in brain, heart, and other cells

Propylene Glycol is a type of mineral oil that, in the industrial grade, is used in antifreeze, paints, enamels, and airplane deicers. In result can cause organ system toxicity.

These are just a few I mentioned, however, there are other harmful chemicals in name brand toothpaste.

3. TAKES LESS THAN 5 MINUTES TO PREPARE

For those of us who are super busy and have a difficult time committing to DIY projects—DO NOT FRET! Make your perfect toothpaste in 5 minutes or less. The ingredients that I use for my very own home-made toothpaste are already my household items! These ingredients such as Coconut oil (used for skin and medicinal purposes), Essential oils (used for cleaning, tea, and medicinal purposes), baking soda (used for cleaning and baking purposes) and alkaline water are inexpensive items that can be used to make large amounts of toothpaste.

Here is a sample recipe for all the beginner toothpaste makers out there!

Ingredients
2/3 cup of baking soda

4 table spoons of coconut oil

Filtered water for desired consistency

10 drops of desired essential oil
