BIKES & BOOKS

BIKES AND BOOKS EVENT

Bikes and books event was everything. The weather was perfect, the children enjoyed reading books and riding their bikes to the different libraries around The West End in Atlanta, GA. Black moms blog and WeCycle Atlanta did such a great job putting on the event. I, Wife Mommy CEO, enjoyed reading “Little Professor Skye Favorite Things” to the children. Can’t wait for the next mommy meet up!

READING BOOKS TO CHILDREN IS SO IMPORTANT, HERE ARE 4 TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN READING TO ENCOURAGE LEARNING AND BUILDING SELF-CONFIDENCE:

  1. Choose books with plenty of sight words.

“Am, an, and, are, at” are a few sight words. Sight words account for about 75% of the words used in children’s books and are encouraged to be memorized, because they can’t easily be sounded out. In a recent interview with my husband Javares Banks, Munson Steed founder of “Rolling Out”, mentions why he decided to release his first children’s book “Little professor Skye Favorite Things”. He covered the importance of children learning their sight words. Sight words are building blocks to understanding and mastering the English language.

  1. Visuals are very important

Not only is learning these sight words critical to their learning it is also important that we combine the sight words with the sight/visuals of characters that look like them. When children feel strongly connected to their culture by reading books with characters they can relate to, seeing characters/people on TV, and public figure that look like them they do better. It builds their self-confidence about who they are, in result improves their academic success.

  1. Developing a love for reading

Do you want a child who excels at reading? Developing a love for reading at an early stage will prevent them just reading to answer comprehension questions but not look forward to the process. We must inspire our children to fall in love with books. Any problem we could possibly run into regarding books and reading in the future would be made easier if we nurtured a deep and abiding love for reading in each of our children. Get creative during reading time and make it fun. Bring out your old favorites and give them choices. At times, I choose books with activities that allows us to interact.

  1. Reading is the foundation to success

Many important skills throughout life require reading like communication being a very important one. Reading is important because it develops the mind. The mind is a muscle and needs exercise daily. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language skills. It also helps them learn to listen. Everybody wants to talk, but few can really listen. Lack of listening skills can result in major misunderstandings which can lead to many other disasters, small and great. Reading helps children focus on what someone else is communicating.

Let’s continue making reading exciting and implementing new books in our routines frequently. Don’t forget to like, subscribe and share!
